As a young boy I loved my dog, well the family dog I should say, but I hated the smell he left in dad’s car after our walks. At that time we owned a large greyhound called Jimmy and he needed a lot of exercise, which I didn’t mind but I always hated the drive back from the fields we would let him run in. The smell was always there though even when the dog wasn’t in the car and there is nothing worse than the smell of wet dog in a confined space. I won’t even go into any stories of girls, my dad’s car and that awful wet dog smell in the back.
As adult I have made sure that my own cars don’t smell of wet dog but. As far as I could see there were two ways to avoid this, one don’t get a dog and two don’t take the dog in the car. As for not owning a dog well that was never going to happen, my love of our most faithful friend too strong to ignore so as soon as I left college I got my very own dog, a beautiful Golden Retriever called Ginger. As for the second method, not taking the dog in the car, well that too was almost impossible, as Ginger need long runs and the nearest park was a good way from our house.

No, the best way I found to make sure the car was to have the back seat of the car, and even the hatchback area of one SUV we owned, covered with a dog hammock. There were a lot to choose from and on average we have found that they last for a year or more with heavy use. That’s to say that take the dog out in the everyday, even the cheap dog hammock we had at that time lasted a year. Now we have gone for a deluxe version which still gives our cars back seat great protection, avoids the car having the wet dog smell and never having to spend hours trying to get the hairs of the back seat.
